AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Last Days of Jack Sparks is a highly-regarded modern horror novel centered on an arrogant, skeptic journalist who attempts to debunk the supernatural only to face a potential possession. It is frequently praised for its unconventional narrative structure and its use of a deeply unreliable narrator. While the protagonist is intentionally designed to be unlikeable, most readers find the story gripping enough to overcome his abrasive personality, though a minority of readers find him too off-putting to finish the book.
Pros
- Genuinely scary and unsettling horror sequences
- Engaging and fast-paced 'unreliable narrator' perspective
- Unique and modern take on the demonic possession subgenre
- Strongly recommended for fans of 'found footage' style storytelling in prose
Cons
- The protagonist is extremely arrogant and abrasive by design
- Polarizing humor; some find it funny while others find it annoying
Caveats
- The main character's unlikeability is a core plot element, but it can be a significant barrier for readers who need a sympathetic lead.
- The narrative shift requires patience as the narrator's reliability is gradually questioned.
Best for
- Fans of horror literature looking for a modern classic
- Readers who enjoy complex, unreliable narrators
- Those looking for a mix of dark humor and genuine scares
Avoid if
- You cannot tolerate an intentionally obnoxious or 'awful' main character
- You prefer traditional, straightforward supernatural narratives

I’ve finished probably less than 15 audiobooks in my life and some of my faves were: The Last Days of Jack Sparks
Jack Sparks from THE LAST DAYS OF JACK SPARKS.
The Last days of Jack Sparks
The Last Days of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnopp has a rather straightforward surface level premise, that continually distorts and unsettles and becomes increasingly surreal. It's actually quite funny but also manages to be pretty scary and built up quite a sense of dread and unease.
The story beats are tight but not so cramped as to hurt the pacing. And the author uses tropes to great effect, imo
The Last Days of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnopp. It had me laughing in some parts which let my guard down for the scarier parts to really get to me.

The Last Days of Jack Sparks is a fun read involving a demon.
The Last Days of Jack Sparks
I thought The Last Days of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnopp was not only terrifying in it's depiction of possession, but a really clever take on the genre.
