Pros
- The Incandescent by Emily Tesh: fully delivered on the “magic school from a teacher’s POV” premise. This was a lot of fun.
- The Grimoire Grammar Parent Teacher Association by Caitlin Rozakis and The Incadescent by Emily Tesh were both fun twists on the magic school
- The incandescent by Emily Tesh has romance elements although it also not high fantasy and has a lot else going on. It's good enough that I'll recommend it
- this was a very readable book that felt incredibly real for a private school that teaches magic in the English countryside. ... It was definitely fun to get a magic school story from a teacher’s perspective
- A few of my favorite books include The Incandescent by Emily Tesh
Cons
- Now, thanks to The Incandescent, I know what a bad book is and what hating a book really feels like. ... the pacing was awful, the characters were flatter than a single layer of graphene and the plot was stupid and incredibly forced.
- Parent context: I'm reading The Incandescent by Emily Tesh, and want to use it for the Parent Protagonist square. Reply: I don’t think so. She is very explicitly not her students’ surrogate parent, to the point she doesn’t really know h...
- Really enjoyed that underused perspective ... and the competence that comes with it ... As much as I enjoyed the competence porn and the detailed day-in-the-life of the underfunded/overworked educators, I was left a little cold by the la...

The Incandescent by Emily Tesh... Solid trad-pub pacing and prose. I think this is a generally enjoyable book that will appeal to a wide variety of readers... MC had some unreliable narrator aspects I enjoyed... Romantic tension felt forced, but was fun once I suspended my disbelief
Parent context: I'm reading The Incandescent by Emily Tesh, and want to use it for the Parent Protagonist square. Reply: I don’t think so. She is very explicitly not her students’ surrogate parent, to the point she doesn’t really know how to discuss personal matters with them and is shocked at the inappropriateness of it when one of them seeks her out late in the evening. She makes a real point of boundaries around being a teacher vs pastoral care.
Magic school: brand new book by Emily Tesh - The Incandescent. Looooved this one. Actually focused on the mechanics of magic, and follows a teacher not a student
Really enjoyed that underused perspective ... and the competence that comes with it ... As much as I enjoyed the competence porn and the detailed day-in-the-life of the underfunded/overworked educators, I was left a little cold by the lack of surprises
