Dandelion Dynasty has a good mix of character depth and worldbuilding, but it's not as strong as either series in their respective strengths, and first book in particular is very birds-eye view, at times like reading a history book. There is a heavy focus on technology and its applications to war.

The pinnacle for me is The Dandelion Dynasty by Ken Liu. It really wrestles with a lot and has a ton of cool battles. The first book is a bit dense, more like a history text book. But it does *a lot* of heavy lifting for the rest of the series.
