Pros

  • I just started reading the colour of magic yesterday. It’s my first discworld book and I didn’t really know what to expect going into it. When he started with a brief, almost off to the side joke about the big bang theory I was hooked.
  • Skip The Colour of Magic? That's literally one of the best books I've read by Pratchett
  • I started with the first one, The Colour of Magic. I think it’s a fine place to start.
  • The Color of Magic is a good book and it's the very first one.

Cons

  • Parent context: I just started reading the colour of magic yesterday. It’s my first discworld book and I didn’t really know what to expect going into it. Reply: That is one of the worst books in the entire series (still good) in my opini...
  • Try Discworld by terry Pratchett... Skip the first one though.
  • I just finished Pratchett's *The Colour of Magic.* I honestly didn't love the book that much but I want to give the Discworld series a second chance.
  • avoid the Colour of Magic for your first read, because that one was a real drag. Maybe save that one once you've read a few others.
  • I found the two first books to be less engaging and less fun than the rest of the series. ... they were not terrible, just not as great as the rest of the series so far.

Reply: That is one of the worst books in the entire series (still good) in my opinion. If you like that one I’ll pretty much promise you you’ll LOVE Discworld as much as I do.

the thing to understand about Color of Magic and Light Fantastic (the first two) is that, while all Discworld books are satire, those two are satire of specifically 80s style sword-and-sorcery pulp fantasy, and most of the references and jokes will go over your head if you aren't familiar with 80s pulp. I enjoyed them, but they haven't aged as well as books like Going Postal
