The book I bounced off for the same reason is The Book Thief. Death narrates it, which ought to make the material unavoidable, and instead the voice keeps stepping in front of it - every time something is about to land you get a lovely aside about colours. I understand why people love it. It read to me as a book that had decided in advance how sad I was allowed to be.
I would highly recommend The Book Thief which is such a beautiful book without the horror.
