AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Tesla Model Y is a dominant but polarizing electric SUV, frequently described as a 'lifted Model 3.' While it remains a global best-seller praised for its software and FSD performance, it faces increasing criticism regarding its ride quality, reliability ratings, and the brand's public image. Recent discussions highlight a shifting landscape where competitors are beginning to rival its features and value.
Pros
- Consistently high sales volume and market dominance in multiple regions
- Superior software integration compared to many legacy competitors
- Effective implementation of Full Self-Driving (FSD) features
- Practical 'lifted' design based on the proven Model 3 platform
Cons
- Harsh suspension and ride quality, despite reported improvements
- Lack of a dedicated driver display or Head-Up Display (HUD)
- Significant depreciation caused by frequent manufacturer price cuts
- Mixed reliability reports, with some users citing early 'wear and tear' issues
Caveats
- Brand sentiment is heavily influenced by the CEO's public persona, leading some owners to switch brands
- The charging curve and range are noted as inferior to some newer market entrants
- Service centers may classify early mechanical issues as standard wear and tear
Best for
- Buyers who prioritize a seamless software experience and proven EV infrastructure
- Drivers who want a high-utility, 'lifted' version of the Model 3
Avoid if
- You require a traditional instrument cluster or HUD
- You are sensitive to stiff or harsh vehicle suspensions
- You are concerned about rapid vehicle value depreciation

The magic of the Model Y is it's just a lifted Model 3. Pretty much every other Tesla project has been massively behind schedule. We're now five years behind schedule for Roadster 2.0, for instance.
Front-end is so-so but I'm *really* digging the Cylon rear-end, tbh.
The new Model Y and Model 3 have only been out a short time and I see them every single time I leave the house.
The Y has a pretty bad charging curve, harsh suspension (although much improved), a much lower range/smaller battery, no hud or driver display etc.
The Model Y is their best selling car by a long shot.
Parent context: Indeed. I don’t see anything new in that sense. Model Y is a toned down X. Reply: The Model Y is a raised Model 3. The Model X is a raised Model S.
Tesla has quite a positive reputation in China, think like Tesla in 2019 in the US haha.
They still have a very good EV in the Y
Go check the Australian EV subreddits, and many Australians are already commenting how the Zeekr 7x is better than the Tesla Model Y (not all Australians think its better, but many Australians do).
The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling vehicle in November. ... The Tesla Model Y remains strongly dominant in Norway
