Did both, and I found the Borderless more fun. You can wander around it while the Planets is on a rail.
I would honestly skip TeamLabs. It was (by far) the most overrated thing I've been to in Tokyo. Just a place for people to take some pictures for their social media and in the end of the day its just rook after rokm with some sort of light installation.
- Way too many people with little to no crowd control. Once inside it’s a free-for-all as far as where you go and what you do. - Too many rambunctious, over-stimulated children, even on a weekday morning. Weekends and holidays must be unbearable. - Everybody seemed to be more interested in taking photos than in actually being in the moment and enjoying the exhibit. I got whacked with selfie-sticks numerous times, despite the fact that they’re not allowed. - This is on me, but I don’t like the sensation of being in water... sloshing around in the dark, in ankle-deep water at TeamLab along with hundreds of other people made me uncomfortable. -The heavily-chlorinated water made my skin itch.
Personally, TeamLab Planets was the #1 Most Hated Thing I’ve Ever Done in Japan (and I’ve been visiting since 1994). Make sure it’s something they really want to do before spending the time, effort, and money.
I’m glad you were able to successfully navigate Team Labs Planet. I’m in my late 60s and thought it was Hell on Earth. I couldn’t wait to get out
I’m not saying it’s uninteresting, we really enjoyed it. However, it’s finite. Ginza pairs well with the teamLab Planets area.

Planets was of course more interactive but that means you had to queue, listen to instructions, follow what other people are doing.
Probably don't need to do TeamLabs Planets and Borderless, just pick one.
