Reddit take

Not enough linked mention summaries yet; the source excerpts below are the evidence.

Pros

  • Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan are great in July - in fact many of the mountain treks and horseback rides are open only during that time of year.

Cons

  • A lot of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan was snowed in as you mentioned so we mostly stuck to major Kyrgyz cities and just popped over to Panjakent, TJ from Samarkand.
  • Tajikistan is the only one that *can* be tricky, but it’s fine. There’s still shared minivans to most places and private drivers aren’t that expensive if you need to be somewhere at a specific time.
  • Tajikistan - Mostly for hiking and lakes. Otherwise I would skip it, unless you're interested in experiencing Persian (Farsi-speaking)people among predominantly Turkic speaking neighbors.
  • There is a constant risk of war and police crackdowns in Iran and Tajikistan is a totalitarian state with little space for you to enjoy life as a young person.
