Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Super Mario Odyssey is widely celebrated as a "perfect platformer" and a definitive title for the Nintendo Switch. It is frequently cited as one of the best entries in the Mario franchise, praised for its mechanical depth, creative world-building, and polished gameplay. While a small minority of users find the experience "stale," the vast majority of the community views it as a robust, high-quality "love letter" to the genre with significant post-game depth.
Pros
- Highly polished and mechanically robust 3D platforming
- Creative and unique level-specific mechanics, such as digging through cheese or snow
- Extensive post-game content, including multiple new areas to explore after the main story
- Strong sense of freedom and better pacing compared to previous entries
- Memorable and humorous additions, like the ability to ride a motorcycle or change into various outfits
Cons
- A small minority of players find the gameplay loop "boring" or "stale"
- Occasional difficulty spikes, with some users reporting frequent deaths in certain sections
- Polarizing control preferences (e.g., specific button mappings like 'B' to jump)
Caveats
- The data includes some noise from other entities named 'Odyssey,' such as vehicles and other video game titles, though the primary sentiment remains focused on the Mario title.
- Some users compare it to Astro Bot, with mixed opinions on which title offers a more modern platforming experience.
Best for
- Fans of 3D platformers and the 'collectathon' genre
- Nintendo Switch owners looking for essential, top-tier library titles
- Players who enjoy significant post-game exploration and secrets
Avoid if
- You prefer strictly linear platforming experiences without exploration
- You are sensitive to 'collectathon' mechanics that require finding numerous items to progress

The first Mario game to let you ride a motorcycle, and the first to let Mario strip down to his boxers.
I was not a fan of Odyssey
Picked up one, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Super Mario Odyssey.
For both of these games Switch 2 was just added as a platform for the original release, which is what has happened for games that received free Switch 2 updates (e.g. Mario Odyssey, ARMS, etc).
The main thing stopping me from attempting this, and replaying Odyssey in general, is how so many Moons are locked behind the credits. It really limits your options (and how rewarding exploration can be) at the beginning.
Super Mario Odyssey 4/5 A replay of a game I wasn’t originally that keen on. The mechanics are excellent and exploring is genuinely fun. I still prefer the older 3D Mario style like 64, but it’s hard to fault Odyssey. Mario’s movement alone is top tier.
In Odyssey, you beat the game, and there's still three more areas to explore.
Odyssey is so much better
Yeah $50K would be a decent price, that’s what a mini-van costs(mid-trim Odyssey is $46K before taxes).
I do still prefer Odyssey
