AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Super Mario 3D World is highly regarded as a successful hybrid of 2D and 3D Mario design, frequently cited as one of Nintendo's premier co-op experiences. While it lacks the open-ended exploration of other 3D entries, it is praised for its imaginative level design, constant introduction of new mechanics, and a high-quality soundtrack. However, opinions are occasionally split on its fixed camera system and a level-to-level progression that some find disjointed or generic compared to more thematic Mario titles.

Pros

  • Exceptional local co-op gameplay, often called some of Nintendo's best multiplayer work.
  • Creative level design that constantly introduces new mechanics to maintain a sense of novelty.
  • Highly praised soundtrack and overall technical polish.
  • Extensive post-game content that provides a significant challenge for skilled players.
  • Effective 'marriage' of 2D precision platforming with 3D movement.

Cons

  • Fixed camera angles can be frustrating and occasionally ruin the experience for some players.
  • Overworld and level themes can feel random and lack a cohesive sense of place.
  • Main game content is considered relatively easy by veteran players.
  • Some users find the level-based structure 'generic' compared to more ambitious 3D Mario titles.

Caveats

  • Some long-time fans feel the original Wii U version is superior because certain levels were specifically designed for tablet functionality and original physics that didn't translate perfectly to the Switch.
  • The game uses a level-based style rather than the open-exploration style found in titles like Mario Odyssey or 64.

Best for

  • Groups looking for a high-quality cooperative multiplayer game.
  • Fans of 2D Mario looking to transition into 3D gameplay.
  • Players who enjoy 'completionist' runs with lots of collectibles.

Avoid if

  • You strongly dislike fixed camera perspectives in 3D platformers.
  • You prefer the open-world exploration style of 3D Mario games over linear levels.
  • You want a cohesive, themed world-building experience.

This might possibly be because I played it immediately after Super Mario 3D World, which I really enjoyed and made Donkey Kong seem less fresh and creative.

3D Mario at its weakest is still pretty good. Imaginative levels, a bit on the easy side, but with a lot of stuff to collect.

Super Mario 3D World 3.5/5 I’m not usually a fan of this level-based Mario style, but it was enjoyable enough. Fun to play, great music, and it looks really good. Solid, polished Mario, just not my preferred flavour.

For a mix of both 2D and 3D level based gameplay I find that Super Mario 3D Land, and Super Mario 3D World offer the best compromise.

For a mix of both 2D and 3D level based gameplay I find that Super Mario 3D Land, and Super Mario 3D World offer the best compromise. They offer precise platforming, while still retaining the relatively forgiving nature of a 3D platform game.

3D World was the most fun I had with a Mario game in a long time. It felt like someone had taken what I liked about older Mario games and made it feel new again.

loved 3d world when it came out and 100% the switch version a couple years ago.

I also agree about the lack of theme in the overworld and levels in 3D World. It would’ve been a lot better if the snow levels were all in a snowy overworld, the grassy levels all together, then maybe a desert world, or whatever. Having every successive level be a totally random thing and very little meaningful differentiation between the overworlds was disappointing and disorienting.

as while not a bad game it felt exceedingly generic and left little in the way of an impression on me.
