Sun Eater is a highly polarizing space opera series that elicits strong, conflicting reactions regarding its prose and pacing. Fans celebrate it as a modern masterpiece with beautiful writing and an epic scope that interrogates theology and societal institutions. Conversely, critics find the prose pretentious and tangent-heavy, often describing the first book as a slow, derivative hurdle that some readers struggle to overcome.
Pros
- Grand, epic scale that fits the 'perfect definition' of a space opera.
- Thought-provoking exploration of themes like transhumanism, theology, and government.
- Unique storytelling that spans thousands of years, making characters feel mythological.
- Significant improvement in quality and stakes starting with the second and third books.
Cons
- The first book is widely considered slow and difficult to get through.
- Polarizing prose that frequently interrupts dialogue with long, philosophical tangents.
- The protagonist (Hadrian) is described by some as tedious or lacking agency.
- Heavy reliance on quotations and references to classic literature, which some view as derivative or unearned.
Caveats
- Readers often suggest that you must reach the second book ('Howling Dark') to truly understand the series' potential.
- Interpersonal dynamics and side characters are frequently cited as a weak point compared to the world-building.
- The prose style is a 'love it or hate it' factor that determines whether a reader will enjoy the series.
Best for
- Fans of 'Dune', 'Hyperion', or 'A Song of Ice and Fire'.
- Readers who enjoy 'literary' sci-fi with a focus on philosophical and societal interrogation.
- Those looking for a long-form series with a massive chronological scope.
Avoid if
- You prefer fast-paced action over dense, eloquent prose.
- You are bothered by protagonists who quote classic literature extensively.
- You have a low tolerance for slow-burn world-building in the opening volume of a series.

It doesn't really have cool world building. Most everything interesting is just taken from either the Bible, or older popular sci-series and barely changed. If you've read Book of the New Sun, Dune, Hyperion, Foundation, and a handful of other sci-fi staples there's not much novelty to Sun Eater.
I really liked Sun Eater over all, but I was disappointed by some things - especially the ending.
The Sun Eater series by Christopher Ruocchio is the best sci-fi series I have read in a long time. I'm a huge Dune-head and it has a lot of Dune's bones. Highly recommend!
Sun Eater - My favorite series of all time. Like the other series I read all books in a row and it just took over my life. Hadrian Marlow still stands as my favorite character in fiction atm and the audiobook narrator was absolutely incredible.
Sun Eater has a very interesting story to tell but my goodness does Ruocchio overwrite the hell out of those books. It just feels like the author is constantly needlessly showing off and it majorly detracts from the book. ... I really enjoy the politics, worldbuilding, and *discovery* feeling of this series. It feels large in scope and time while still being able to maintain its through-line (mostly).
Sun Eater, The Expanse, WOTM, LOTR.. All in my tier list where you’d expect.
I would say the Sun Eater series fits this, tho not until the very end but I liked that reveal.
I just read the entire series over the past year and it is now firmly on my Mt Rushmore with those other series. I think it’s perfect for a Hobb lover if you’re not too turned off by space operas.
It's bad: ... Sun Eater
I’m on book 4 of the Sun Eater series, and I love it!
