Pros

  • Summoner Wars Second Edition. All the fun of a CCG with none of the hassle. Tons of expansions.
  • Dueling: summoner wars
  • I think the only two advantages of 1st edition is that some prefer the art, and that the games were less swingy.
  • 2nd edition is far superior in gamplay, synergy, consistency, and accessibility. They built it from the ground up to have more flexibility for phases and deckbuilding.
  • Parent context: I think deck building would almost always make the decks weaker. Reply: This couldn't be more wrong. There are official deckbuilding tournaments on the official app/website, and there are really crazy and broken combos.

Cons

  • Even if you are allowed to, if the design space is not conducive to that sort of swapping bc of specific tribal abilities more so than 1st edition, I would say 2nd would have less theory crafting
  • Parent context: Second edition plays much, much faster. First edition suffered from ‘turtling’, while second edition punishes you for not attacking the enemy. Second edition has basically no deck building. The preconstructed decks are...

  • I remember playing the 1st Edition Master Set years ago, our early games ran about 45 minutes, but we were going slow as we learned. I could easily see matches finishing in the 30–60 minute range once players got comfortable.

The disparity between decks is smaller so you don’t need to as much.

Second edition has basically no deck building. The preconstructed decks are very much designed to work together. You can play a little with the edges if you want, and there are some mercenary cards you can mix it, but honestly they are designed to function as one cohesive deck and I think deck building would almost always make the decks weaker.

But second edition is much faster to learn and has less text density on the cards. Once you know first edition, the games will last until both players run out of resources. Second edition can be quite a bit more explosive. Tournaments in second edition have more room to grow because it's currently being developed and the deckbuilding options are more open.

The 2nd edition rules are streamlined so it is slightly faster, but honestly what I sometimes do is play the first edition decks with v2 map and most v2 rules, as this seems best for me
