Pros

  • Going from 2015 to 2020 was huge -- hydro discs, thru-axles, really good electronic shifting, GRX, wireless SRAM shifting, and on, and on.
  • you want a bike that has shimano (acera, alivio, deore, claris, sora, tiagra, 105, ultegra) or sram (X4, X5, eagle, apex, rival, force).
  • SRAM for shifting, Shimano for stopping (brakes).
  • miss the derailleur cage hold on SRAM
  • I like the sram derailleur hold open for maintenance so I guess that's a plus.

Cons

  • in terms of component my hands does not like Sram
  • I’m guessing your current bike has sram in it, in which case you’re kind of stuck with the 1x.
  • I can't find the post, but I swear this has come up before on bikewrench, and I made fun of SRAM's quality control then, too. I wonder if I deleted it because people are so sensitive about the low quality of SRAM's production lines (see...
  • I think SRAM is fine too and was considering it when I was looking for a new bike earlier this year, but once I decided I wanted hydraulic brakes that narrowed it down to Shimano only. SRAM uses DOT hydraulic fluid while Shimano uses a m...
  • I used to be a SRAM fanboy but I’m pissed at SRAM for inventing stupid expensive wireless and all the trickle effects from that like frames with no cable ports

I can't find the post, but I swear this has come up before on bikewrench, and I made fun of SRAM's quality control then, too. I wonder if I deleted it because people are so sensitive about the low quality of SRAM's production lines (see Rockshox SID crowns, Avid brakes, SRAM DB8 brakes, 2008 Boxxers, etc.).

I think SRAM is fine too and was considering it when I was looking for a new bike earlier this year, but once I decided I wanted hydraulic brakes that narrowed it down to Shimano only. SRAM uses DOT hydraulic fluid while Shimano uses a mineral oil-base fluid.

My hands were constantly cramping on my bike with SRAM brakes…I hated them so much.

I have sram on all my bikes so yes I do have an occasional dropped chain.

SRAM work a hell of a lot better than people think. But have to be set up and tuned meticulously or they feel like shit. DOT fluid, and their seals are under designed and leak if you over pressurize the system even a tiny bit.
