Some of the populated areas, like Zadar, can be a pain to park in. I can only imagine what Split and Dubrovnik are like.
Split sucks as a city and I would not recommend it as a place to base yourself (although it is well connected via ferry harbour and the airport).

Split was very pretty, and we enjoyed it too. We were looking for a quiet time and a chance to absorb the town centre / Diocleatian Palace. That was a treat when there were so few visitors.
I’ve walked around Split a few times, and it is quite nice, but at the end of the day, it’s just a hopping off point for the islands.
Split - if you’re into the Roman stuff; while Diocletian’s Palace is the most obvious choice, Solin is also easily reached from the city and is the site of Salona, one of the largest Roman cities. Whole bunch of ruins there.
I still say save Croatia for another trip, maybe combine it with Italy.
I’d explore Rovinj in that region too then move towards Split which is a great base to explore nearby islands as well as inland + mabe spend 2 days exploring the city itself.
