I started off from the US and went to Southeasr Asia and had a blast for 8 months.
I’ve done most of SEA, though as a half-dozen or so two-three week vacations rather than a 3-4 month sabbatical. IMHO even a couple months is more than enough time to hit up all the “major” sights there. This sub tends to over-rotate on making people feel like they need months and months to do just to a place. Three months will be more than enough time to hit up all the major stuff plus some off the beaten path stuff too.
I lived in southern China for a year and travelled all over Southeast Asia and I honestly can't actually remember seeing any snakes outside of restaurants, except maybe like once in a rice paddy?
Millions of people visit SE Asia, especially Thailand, every year. Most of those people don't cause any problems. If you live here, you see plenty of locals exhibiting bad behavior too. And at the end of the day it's money.
Yeah, living off $15K is super easy in SEA and will take you through at least a year if you do hosteling. Source: did 9 months across 4 continents in 2017-2018 on ~$23K and could have easily gone much longer if I'd stayed in the much cheaper SEA portion of my trip.

Backpacking in Asia is an entirely different game, and if you want to be social while traveling, it’s good for that as there are hundreds of tourists all making the same stops at the same time and it’s easy to make friends to travel with.
Then I went back to the US, saved another $8,000 over a few months, and now I’m out in Southeast Asia for another 10 months living on that.
I recommend SE Asia. Its expensive to get to from the US but once you are there it's cheap, safe, and fun. And there will be tons of other travelers. It's really the perfect budget or first-time trip.
