Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Sony X90L is a highly regarded Full-Array Local Dimming (FALD) LED TV, frequently praised for its superior upscaling, motion handling, and color accuracy. While it is a 2023 model, it remains a staple recommendation in home theater communities for sports and general viewing. However, opinions are mixed regarding its value in 2025, with some users preferring newer Mini-LED competitors that offer higher brightness and more dimming zones for a similar price.

Pros

  • Superior upscaling and image processing
  • Accurate color reproduction out of the box
  • Excellent motion handling, making it a top choice for sports
  • Full-array local dimming provides better contrast than edge-lit sets
  • Strong performance in HDR content with bright highlights

Cons

  • Disappointing built-in speaker quality
  • Noticeable blooming, especially compared to Mini-LED or OLED
  • VA panel limitations including black smear
  • Potential for Dirty Screen Effect (DSE) on larger panels
  • Older 2023 hardware that some feel is outdated compared to 2024/2025 releases

Caveats

  • Community debate exists over whether to choose this model or newer Mini-LED sets like the TCL QM8
  • Some users reported technical glitches when pairing the TV with older AV receivers
  • For casual viewing at a distance, some users suggest prioritizing a larger screen size over the X90L's processing advantages

Best for

  • Sports fans who need high-quality motion processing
  • Users who watch a lot of low-resolution or cable content and need strong upscaling
  • Buyers looking for a reliable 'Tier 1' brand without the price tag of an OLED

Avoid if

  • You rely on built-in TV speakers for your primary audio
  • You are highly sensitive to blooming or light bleed in dark rooms
  • You want the most current 2024 or 2025 display technology

During a sale I picked up a 75" Sony x90l and have spent hours watching concerts and films in all their beauty.

Anyways, to answer your question no. The X90L is a great TV and is far superior than any of those Samsungs you were looking at.

Best Buy Canada currently has a 75” Sony X90L for $1,699. It’s above the price you mentioned, but honestly it’s a fantastic TV and worth considering.

The X90L uses a full-array backlight with local dimming, which gives you way better contrast and deeper blacks than an edge-lit set like the Samsung Q8F. That means HDR content actually pops, highlights look brighter without the rest of the image washing out.

But Sony is known for doing wsy more with less. Take for instance the 2023 Hisense U7K and TCL r646. Both of them were Mini-Led panels with hundreds of dimming zones but the Sony X90L....a FALD standard led panel looked better in almost every aspect.... aside from slightly worse blooming.

I find it in some ways it's much better than my old Sony x90L and in some ways worse.
