The first act especially reminded me of *Small Gods* in tone and theme.

The entry to the world is typically Small Gods.

Terry Pratchett’s Small Gods is a fantasy novel with humor, but it centers around a monk having his own crisis of faith. Pratchett’s exploration of faith and corruption of faith by man give a lot of insight that may ease your pain.

My personal recommendations for a starting place would be Guards! Guards! or Small Gods.
