Slovenia

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Slovenia is highly regarded as a compact, affordable, and stunningly beautiful alternative to Switzerland and Austria. Travelers frequently praise its "indescribable" natural beauty, particularly its lakes and mountains, and note that it offers a peaceful, tourist-friendly experience at a fraction of the cost of its Western European neighbors.
Pros
- Exceptional natural scenery including mountains, forests, and lakes (notably Lake Bled)
- Significantly more affordable than Switzerland or Norway while offering similar alpine aesthetics
- Compact geography allows for easy exploration and multiple day trips from a single base like Ljubljana
- Safe and accessible for first-time solo travelers
- High-quality local food and superb wine
- Generally lower tourist density compared to major Mediterranean hubs
Cons
- Small size leads to mixed opinions on trip duration; some find more than 7 days too long
- Scenery can feel redundant if you have already spent significant time in the Austrian Alps
- Can be physically and mentally exhausting if attempting to treat the compact country like a fast-paced race
Caveats
- While the country itself is small, adding it to a broader Balkan itinerary can significantly increase driving times if not planned carefully
- Public transport (buses) is described as decent and inexpensive, but a car is recommended for maximum flexibility in the hinterlands
Best for
- Budget-conscious nature lovers
- First-time solo travelers
- Hikers and outdoor enthusiasts
- Short road trips (4–10 days)
Avoid if
- You are looking for a large country with vast, diverse geographical regions to explore over several weeks
- You prefer high-energy, urban-centric vacations over nature and quiet landscapes

For me, Slovenia really surprised me in the best way the scenery, how peaceful it felt, and how easy it was to explore.
Slovenia. The wine is superb, the food is pretty good, scenery is lovely and the tourist numbers are lower
Slovenia is always a weird one to me because don’t get me wrong, it has a lot of nice things… but a LOT of those nice things are not exclusive to Slovenia. Like Lake Bled is lovely, but there are many, many nice lovely lakes similar to it just across the border in Austria- you just don’t hear about them because Slovenia only has the one.
We did a Balkan’s roadtrip for our honeymoon. Started in Belgrade and did a full loop. We included Slovenia and it turned out to be the absolute highlight of the trip.
Slightly off path would be adding Slovenia, again for mountains and lakes on a much smaller scale.
I haven't been to Switzerland, but Slovenia is basically a smaller version of what I imagine Switzerland to be. Even the housing in the countryside looks the same.
You can also get to Slovenia or Croatia pretty well from Venice.
Switzerland, Norway or Slovenia might be some good options.
Slovenia was lovely in October!
