Pros

  • Since you enjoyed Catch-22 and Breakfast of Champions, this is worth reading. Same dry humor and cynicism, but tighter and more focused.
  • Slaughterhouse five, Death of Ivan illych, Franny and Zoey
  • It and his letter home after being a POW in WWII gave more insight into his scifi anti war satire book slaughterhouse five.
  • To me there are better ones (like Slaughterhouse Five and Mother Night)
  • I usually rank books using an A - F grade scale, all these were in the “A” range for me.

Cons

  • I'd also recommend Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five. It can be a bit of a difficult read both in the way it is written and how depressing it is but it is a very strong indictment of the futility of war.
  • I feel like Slaughterhouse-Five is one of his weaker books, honestly. I don't feel like it captures his biting humor as totally as something like *Cat's Cradle* does. ... the sci-fi elements (that work so well in his other books) were ju...
  • I think the narrative meandering and the surreal/sci-fi happenings of Slaughterhouse made it difficult for me to latch onto what's actually going on.
  • I also attempted Piranesi and Slaughterhouse-Five but couldn’t get into them.

I would not necessarily recommend my top favorites to a beginning reader. But all of the following are great reads that hold broad general appeal: ... Slaughterhouse Five

I once stayed at an AirBNB and as I was looking through the host's books I came across a signed first edition of Slaughterhouse Five.

I feel like Slaughterhouse-Five is one of his weaker books, honestly. I don't feel like it captures his biting humor as totally as something like *Cat's Cradle* does. ... the sci-fi elements (that work so well in his other books) were just way out of touch for me. It took me right out of the narrative.

Slaughterhouse-Five is definitely more re-readable. Helped me get through the grief of a couple deaths in my family.
