Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Sifu is a highly-regarded martial arts beat 'em up praised for its fluid, deep combat and unique aging mechanic that rewards skill and persistence. Drawing comparisons to the Batman Arkham series and Sekiro, it is frequently described as a "power fantasy" that successfully captures the feel of a Hong Kong action movie. While the core gameplay is celebrated for being tight and responsive, some players find the later stages less engaging and note technical frustrations with camera positioning in tight spaces.

Pros

  • Fluid and deep combat system that rewards mastery and feels like a "dance."
  • Innovative aging mechanic that adds a unique layer to progression and replayability.
  • Strong atmospheric design that captures a martial arts movie aesthetic.
  • Highly responsive controls and a rewarding skill tree system.
  • Minimal unskippable scenes, focusing heavily on pure gameplay.

Cons

  • Camera visibility and clarity often suffer when the player is backed into corners.
  • Relatively low enemy variety, with most types introduced in the first few stages.
  • Later levels (stages 4 and 5) are sometimes viewed as less visually or mechanically interesting than earlier ones.
  • Bosses can feel mediocre or overly defensive to some players compared to the rest of the combat.

Caveats

  • The gameplay loop is relentless and may feel repetitive or frustrating if the combat mechanics do not "click."
  • While playable on various setups, some users report that it is significantly better with a gamepad than a keyboard/mouse.
  • Performance issues were noted by a small subset of players.

Best for

  • Fans of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice or the Batman Arkham combat system.
  • Players looking for a challenging, skill-based action game with high replay value.
  • Martial arts movie enthusiasts who want to feel like an action hero.

Avoid if

  • You are easily frustrated by camera issues in fast-paced action games.
  • You prefer games with high enemy variety throughout the entire experience.
  • You dislike games that require high levels of patience and defensive play during boss encounters.

The combat is very fun and going back and forth with a boss feels like a dance. Audio and visuals are great. Highly recommend the game to those that are interested.

Now looking to finish the last two levels of Sifu

Yeah, I would say that is the same reason I would say Sifu is also in that category of perfect game. Even though it has way more mechanics than Downwell, it's still pretty straight forward on it's intent, leaving little room to questionable direction choices.

I would also like to do an honorable mention to SIFU. There's a long time since I finished this game, but as far as I remember, I can't tell one single part or mechanic on this game that felt useless, redundant or frustrating. Could easily be a perfect game in my eyes!

Picked up Sifu this week and it has been a lot of fun. It reminds me of Furi and Sekiro. I love super responsive controls in soulslikes.

I love Sekiro a lot but I just can't get into Sifu. I love the art, the Hong Kong action movie vibe but the gameplay is not clicking like it did with Sekiro.

I really should pick Sifu up again tho, liked the game a lot but couldn't handle the controls (I will not play on a gamepad, and you will not force me, silly game) and weirdly poor performance

Sifu is a beat 'em up whose combat is very much in line of the Batman Arkham games, mixed with the martial arts and combos of Sleeping Dogs. ... Sifu's combat system truly shines. ... Sifu instead has uses a magneting system to dynamically target enemies as the fight progresses.

As for gameplay - and unfortunately for those type of games - camera have always been one major factor. Sifu doesn't escape from it. When it comes to be in the corner of any particular stage visibility and clarity goes out the window very often.

Enemy variety is surprisingly low - maybe it also contributes to the game been hard, but not hardcore. After the first 2 maybe 3 stages you might have basically seen all the regular folks and the number is very low.
