Pros
- I've done Shirakawa-go before but might be worth Takayama day trip as it has felt hard to justify the 2+ hour detour to get to it via train but if we can get there via a bus tour or something that could be nice.
- Small tip for Shirakawa-go, if you want lesser people, you can go abit after lunch. Otherwise, you should go as early as possible. Great place.
- Shirakawa-go and the surrounding villages also won me over with their authenticity.
- ot exactly a day trip from Kyoto but i liked Kanazawa and Shirakawa-go
- You are very likely see autumn leaves in Takayama and Shirakawa-go due to higher elevation but very doubtful for your other locations on your trip. Both Takayama and Shirakawa-go should be at peak or close to it.
Cons
- Shirakawa-go (very pretty, very crowded, nice autumn colors).
- Cuz Shirakawa-go itself absolutely doesn't require a car. I'd just take a Nohi-bus from Takayama or wherever you're staying

Shirakawa-go (day trip): This is a super scenic Hida mountain village (UNESCO world heritage) famed for iconic gassho-zukuri farmhouses found in the Hida region. This village is beautiful in all seasons, particularly in winter when it is decked out in snow.

Shirakawa-go should have snow when you are there, ie the houses will have snow on the roofs which is a very popular viewing time of the year so book the bus early.
