Reddit take

Not enough linked mention summaries yet; the source excerpts below are the evidence.

Pros

  • Ended up replacing the whole crankset to a used Ultegra, which was cheaper than the big gears alone.
  • I’d also only spec ultegra or force. Those are just the two that get me going
  • A massive difference between 105 Di2 and Ultegra is that Ultegra has 'ServoWave' brakes. They have a considerable feel difference / performance over 105. (I have both 105 & Ultegra). I would get Ultegra for the brake performance alone.
  • I ride around on a 2012 Cervelo S5 I built up with 11-speed Ultegra and it's a fast bike, no complaints.
  • Used replacement/upgrade 9 or 10 speed ultegra or 105; or more recent Claris are cheap and improve the stock shifting a lot.

Cons

  • All the 105/Ultegra/DuraAce went to 12 speed.
  • Mix of dura ace (top tier) and ultegra (medium tier) components.
  • But for example, my hybrid shifts better than my road bike with Ultegra shifters.
  • The 105 comes in various configurations, but 11-36 is one of them. Ultegra too.
  • Or you could begin upgrading to ultegra if your bothered

I have Ultegra and it's nice but haven't used 105 (current generation) to compare it to
