Sunday when I was using it, I turned off the vacuum and set it down and I saw a light forming under the switch and smoke start to come out. ... something shorted internally in the switch and eventually shorted to the point where it turned on the vacuum. ... No attention paid to how it failed spectacularly. 30% discount is pretty much just being 'on sale' on Amazon. No thanks, Shark.

We currently use the base model Shark vacuum you can find at most home improvement stores, and it's a nice vacuum, but its wearing down.
I think there isn't much modding of cheap household vacuums because they're being designed to be incompatible with anything even other models from the same brand. I.E. you cannot use standard extension wands, tools, and hoses with a Shark vacuum. And you cannot even use attachments from old Sharks on newer Sharks.
