Sennheiser HD 660S2
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Sennheiser HD 660S2 is a refined, warmer evolution of the classic 600-series lineage, praised for its intimate vocal presentation and improved sub-bass response. While many enthusiasts consider it a superior 'all-rounder' that retains the natural timbre Sennheiser is known for, it faces significant criticism regarding its value proposition. A notable segment of users feels the performance gains over the much cheaper HD 6XX or HD 600 do not justify the higher price tag, and some find the soundstage remains narrow compared to planar magnetic competitors.
Pros
- Improved bass and sub-bass extension compared to the HD 600 and HD 650
- Rich, 'syrupy' midrange that excels with intimate female vocals
- Excellent stereo imaging and natural instrument decay
- High comfort level suitable for long listening sessions; lightweight build
- Pairs exceptionally well with tube amplifiers due to its high impedance
Cons
- High MSRP leads to frequent 'overpriced' labels compared to the HD 6XX
- Narrow soundstage that retains the traditional '3-blob' effect
- Recessed upper-mids (2-3k range) can make the tuning feel 'off' or 'weird' to some
- Requires dedicated amplification to perform optimally
Caveats
- Opinions are polarized on whether it is a meaningful upgrade or just a 'mildly different' version of older models
- The tuning is more colored and less strictly neutral than the legendary HD 600
- While bass is improved for the series, it may still lack the 'slam' found in planar headphones
Best for
- Vocal-centric music and listeners who prefer a 'rich' or 'refined' sound
- Daily driver use for those who find the HD 600 too lean in the bass
- Tube amp owners looking for a classic high-impedance pairing
Avoid if
- You are looking for a wide, expansive soundstage (consider Hifiman alternatives)
- You already own an HD 6XX and want a massive technical leap for the money
- You prefer a strictly neutral, reference-grade frequency response

I want to highlight 4 headphones that I would like to know which would be the best. I have already tried some of them: **HIFIMAN ANANDA NANO, MEZE 105 AER, SENHEISSER HD660S2, SIVGA SV023.**
HD 660s2 are the next obvious step up. Improvement in every way, including comfort.
was testing the 660s v2 about two weeks ago and after day 2 I just couldnt anymore, the sound tuning is so off.
Parent context: Agreed, the 660s2's are a mildly different HD650 and for the money, an Arya Stealth will destroy them. Reply: I didn't even feel the "epicness" of the midrange in the 660s2, it was different from the hd6xx which I had for a very long time. ... otherwise they lose to literally any competition in the 400-500$ range.
660s2 are barely an upgrade(ex-owner, biggest disappointment in years) + extremely overpriced for what it is
if I had to choose one as my only pair of cans I'd pick the 660s2 because they're kinda a jack of all trades and master of none.
Both 660s2 and 490 Pro are a technical downgrade from the XS. Timbre may be better for some but I consider it a downgrade
If you are OK with open headphones and waiting a while, another headphone that I liked is the HD660S2, especially with Oratory's EQ applied. It's available at the same price as the M1. They sound warm and extremely resolving, but they need a good DAC/Amp to drive them.
In the thread they recommend the Ollo [S5X 1.1], Audio Technica R70xa, and Sennheiser HD660S2.
If you want something new then the 660s2 is not it, they sound pretty much the same.
