The Seaport was parking lots and working docks 25 years ago - there isn't much history there.
Years ago this area was dirt/muddy parking lots and low brick warehouses. All the buildings in Seaport are modern glass towers, it has a totally different vibe and is definitely not 'old Boston'. There's are a good selection of restaurants and shopping but nowhere near what you'll find in Back Bay. Seaport is on the far edge of Boston's Financial district, so you'll have decent walk to get to 'central Boston'. It also has fewer options to access MBTA subway lines.
Seaport is boring.
The seaport is really boring, but I stayed there last fall at a really nice hotel and just walked to the subway and hung out in all the other more interesting parts of the city. If you're willing to walk a bit and you like the hotel, it's a fine option. There just won't be fun/interesting things to do right near the hotel unless you like venture capital owned chain bars.
