AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Sea of Stars is widely praised for its exceptional visual and auditory presentation, but it receives significant criticism for its narrative depth. While the pixel art and soundtrack are frequently cited as top-tier, many players found the writing amateurish, the characters one-dimensional, and the story's conclusion disappointing. The gameplay is often described as a competent but occasionally repetitive homage to 90s JRPGs that lacks the mechanical evolution found in the classics it emulates.

Pros

  • Stunning pixel art with impressive boss sprites and varied environments
  • Outstanding and extensive soundtrack with many hours of unique tracks
  • Polished and addictive 'Wheels' mini-game
  • Charming, cozy fantasy world and atmosphere

Cons

  • Weak writing characterized by amateurish prose and paper-thin characters
  • Combat can become stale or repetitive over the 30-hour runtime
  • Main characters are often viewed as interchangeable and lacking development
  • Disappointing or rushed ending that feels inconsistent with the rest of the game
  • Simplistic equipment system that relies on basic stat increases

Caveats

  • Heavily borrows from classics like Chrono Trigger and Breath of Fire III, often leading to unfavorable comparisons
  • The timing-based combat mechanics and 'lock' system can be frustrating, especially in the endgame
  • The game's strong focus on the character Garl is polarizing for some players

Best for

  • Players who prioritize high-quality art and music in JRPGs
  • Those seeking a streamlined, 'cozy' RPG experience
  • Fans of the developer's previous work, such as The Messenger

Avoid if

  • Deep storytelling and complex character arcs are your primary reasons for playing JRPGs
  • You prefer complex, evolving combat systems over the course of a long game
  • You are looking for a fishing mini-game with significant depth

Making a JRPG with 2 protagonists that have the exact same personnality is wild, that personnality being as interesting as a Dora the Explorer character is even wilder, I was so disappointed cause I absolutely loved every single moment in The Messenger and felt in love with SoS visuals

I have wishlisted Sea of Stars for my Switch, a JRPG from the same devs, based solely on the quality of their art and music.

The gameplay is decent, but it never really changes much over the ~30 hour runtime. ... Sea of Stars is poorly written compared to most other JRPGs, not just compared to books. It falls way short of Chrono Trigger, any given Final Fantasy, any given SMT or Persona game, the Xeno games, Kingdom Hearts, etc.

The writing of SoS is the worst part of the game by a mile IMO, with paper-thin characters, amateurish prose, and one of the most disappointing endings I've ever seen in a game. ... The art and music *are* incredible, and they're a big part of why I finished SoS despite my disappointment with the story.

Reply: I will warn you that if you didn't like the writing in The Messenger, I think it's pretty likely that you won't like it in Sea of Stars either. very beautiful art and excellent music. Mediocre story but the gameplay, the mini-game and art are good enough to play it all.

Just an hour in and I'm already going, "What a game!" It's got a fun and very snappy battle system, gorgeous graphics and animations, and the plot and characters have me hooked. Each environment so far looks interesting and isn't too long or too short, with puzzles that aren't difficult at all to maneuver through.

To me, it's a perfectly cromulent 7/10 game. It does a few things well, a few not so well. You can tell it's the product of a small team that doesn't have a lot of experience.

I was absolutely bored with it, gorgeous pixel art wasted on baffling mediocre writing(characters, dialogue, story)

It was beautiful to look at, but that's about it IMO. Also, Garl sucks as a character
