Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

The Scottish Highlands are widely regarded by travelers as a must-visit destination, frequently described as "insanely picturesque" and resembling a "fantasy movie." While the natural beauty and hiking opportunities are highly praised, the region requires significant logistical planning, particularly regarding transportation and realistic timeframes for travel between major hubs like Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Pros

  • Stunning, wild natural scenery and "fantasy-like" landscapes
  • Excellent hiking opportunities, particularly in the Isle of Skye and Cairngorms
  • Iconic road trip routes like the NC500
  • Rich cultural landmarks including Eilean Donan Castle and Loch Ness

Cons

  • Challenging driving conditions with narrow, curvy, "1.5-lane" roads shared with heavy vehicles
  • Unpredictable and often harsh weather, including high winds and heavy rain
  • Short daylight hours and cold temperatures significantly limit outdoor activities in winter

Caveats

  • To see the best of the region, travelers generally need to rent a car or join a guided bus tour
  • Itineraries are often overambitious; trying to combine the Highlands with multiple major cities in under 5 days is discouraged
  • Solo hikers should be wary of safety risks and ensure they have reliable communication and check-in plans

Best for

  • Nature photographers and outdoor enthusiasts
  • Road trip fans comfortable with rural driving
  • Travelers seeking a "wild" and remote atmosphere

Avoid if

  • You are uncomfortable driving on the left side of the road in wet or dark conditions
  • You only have a few days and want to focus primarily on city sightseeing
  • You are planning a hiking-centric trip during the winter months

Not really the best time for hiking in Scotland or the Alps. It will be cold and the days will be getting short.

The Scottish Highlands were really amazing, and Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities I've ever seen.

All of these are too much for 10 days, especially with 6 people.

If you loved Derry, Scottish Highlands offer similar vibes with stunning hiking.

Had a wonderful trip through the Scottish highlands back in 2024. We drove the NC500 route, visited Isle of Skye, Cairngorms and Loch Lomond. Really enjoyed the nature there.

But I wouldn’t consider any Scotland trip complete without getting to the highlands.

The Highlands are beautiful, you have Inverness, Loch Ness, Loch Lomond, and Eilean Donan Castle, then in Isle of Skye you have a lot of hiking, I agree the risks of hiking alone should not be ignored, have a cell phone plan, let someone know your path and check in regularly.

Personally, I would spend more time in the highlands and less in Glasgow.
