Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Sardinia is widely celebrated for its world-class beaches and turquoise waters, often described as superior to many mainland Italian coastal destinations. However, it is a large island that requires significant time to explore, and travelers consistently warn that it is difficult to navigate without a rental car.

Pros

  • Stunning turquoise water and hidden beaches, particularly around the Gulf of Orosei
  • High-quality local cuisine, with specific praise for fish and lamb dishes
  • Diverse geography ranging from coastal regions to mountainous hiking areas
  • Offers an off-the-beaten-path vibe with many areas that are not densely populated

Cons

  • Public transport is considered poor, making car rentals almost mandatory
  • Can be very expensive, particularly during the peak month of August
  • The island's large size makes it impractical for short trips or tight itineraries
  • High costs for beach amenities (lidos) during the summer season

Caveats

  • Many travelers suggest skipping Sardinia if you have less than a week, as it deserves its own dedicated trip
  • Logistics for getting to and from the island can be difficult to fit into a standard mainland Italy schedule

Best for

  • Beach enthusiasts and hikers
  • Travelers planning a 1-2 week dedicated vacation
  • Road trip lovers
  • June travelers seeking optimal weather before the August peak

Avoid if

  • You are traveling without a car or rely solely on public transport
  • You have a very limited timeframe (less than 4-5 days)
  • You are on a strict budget during the peak of summer

Even 6 days on Sardinia without Amalfi Coast would be very little. Have you checked how big it is? European perspective: I've not spent my summer vacation (2.5-3 weeks) on Sardinia yet because I feel it's too big and I would not know where to stay.

Sardinia is fantastic (lived and worked there) the beaches are to cry for and the food...if you're into fish or lamb you'll never want to leave!

Felt the same about Sardinia. I had some good meals but felt like it was overall just OK.

I had to cut off Sardinia because I'll have issues renting a car there, and I don't think it's worth it on foot (public transport is quite bad there).

Or just stay in Italy and visit Sardinia, it's basically all you've mentioned, got some nice hikes, beautiful beaches, you have higher up regions which is another world completely.
