Maybe Sarajevo works if you are into contemporary history as the war has left some hard marks on the city. It is a very interesting region and I encourage you to visit and learn as much as you can.
I recommend going to Konjic and doing a tour of Tito's Bunker. You will need a tour guide as parking is non existent. I think it's a 90 min ride from Sarajevo and probably even closer from Mostar.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is an absolute gem, very reasonably priced with wonderful people and a gorgeous city in Sarajevo.
Definitely tied with Slovenia for my favourite stop in the Balkans (I've now been to all countries in the region), and somewhere I would happily stay in for a month or so.
The city, as you can see, is basically in a valley along a river, and its streets are well maintained and clean; it wears its role in history, from the death of Franz Ferdinand starting the first world war to the horrors of the siege in the 1990s, in it's architecture; everywhere you go, you find graves.
Budapest and Vienna, and if you want something a bit more out there I'd recommend Belgrade or Sarajevo.
sarajevo though, man. that city hits different. we stayed in this airbnb in the old town where you could still see bullet holes in the building next door. had coffee with a local who was our age and he told us stories about growing up there in the 90s that just put everything in perspective. 4 days wasn't enough, i'd go back tomorrow.
Sarajevo is noticeably cheaper. Both cities have a lot of history, Sarajevo has a very distinct vibe and character, but Tirana has better day trips.
Been to both, love Albania generally but imo Sarajevo is better than Tirana for a city break. Plenty to do for 4 days, you will have a great time!
