Pros
- I'd recommend going to Sapporo instead, and doing half a day in Otaru. Shift some time away from Toya is you need more in Sapporo/Otaru.
- I went to Sapporo and Hakodate during my trip in Jan/Feb 2025 and it was easily a highlight for us. ... Everything you love about the big cities in Japan but not nearly as hectic. It's a wonderful place and I want to explore more!
- Sapporo — $1,225/mo, 234 Mbps, safety 93. Sapporo's 93 is the highest I've recorded anywhere.
- Those blossoms are stunning—Sapporo looks so much more chill than the chaos in Tokyo!
- Visited three cities - Tokyo(4 days), Sapporo(2 days) and Kyoto(4 days). Overall it was an incredibly fascinating experience and a great culture shock -- everything runs perfectly to the minute, the last mile connectivity of public tran...
Cons
- Sapporo, on the other hand, is a tougher call. It's 4-5 hours by train from Hakodate or an hour by flight, so more investment to just get there. The city is very fun, but not much history.
- Sapporo is nice, but I’d caution against winter travel, or at least add a disclaimer.

Kobe and Sapporo are probably the best cities outside of the "big 3"
2nd time went to the sapporo , hakodate and tokyo. It was so much more relaxed because we decided to just enjoy the scenery and explore without having a crazy itinerary.

Overall, Sapporo during sakura season feels more relaxed compared to Tokyo or Kyoto, but just as beautiful.
This place rocks but it is cold... Probably the best food in Japan. There are some clear stand out meals in Japan that were better than some of our meals in Sapporo but the overall quality and consistency of quality really blew us away.
