Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Santorini is a highly polarizing destination where world-class scenery frequently clashes with intense overtourism. While many travelers maintain that its caldera views are the best in Greece and a "must-see," a significant number of visitors describe the island as an expensive, overcrowded "zoo," particularly during the summer months when cruise ships dominate the harbor.

Pros

  • Unrivaled cliffside and caldera views
  • High-quality food and dining options
  • Unique luxury accommodations, including cliffside infinity pools
  • Iconic bucket-list destination status

Cons

  • Severe overcrowding, especially in Oia and during cruise ship docking hours
  • Significantly higher prices for food and lodging compared to other Greek islands
  • Heavy "tourist trap" atmosphere in popular areas
  • Logistical headaches including long bus rides and congested walkways

Caveats

  • Many businesses may be closed or limited during the off-season (e.g., March)
  • October is noted for being mostly dry with milder temperatures and fewer crowds
  • Oia is only a small part of the island and can require significant travel time from other areas

Best for

  • First-time visitors to Greece
  • Travelers prioritizing iconic photography and scenery
  • Luxury travelers seeking high-end cliffside stays

Avoid if

  • You are seeking a tranquil or quiet getaway
  • You are traveling on a strict budget
  • You want to avoid heavy cruise ship tourism and dense crowds

Wife and I did 14 days in Greece on a guided tour (was our 2nd intl trip) about 15 years ago and it was amazing - athens, mykanos, santarini - and exhausting. Would do it again before we went back to hawaii

Santorini is obviously very expensive and touristic.

Dear lord not Santorini if you want "tranquil". The place is a zoo.

Oía, and Santorini in general, is genuinely one of, if not my favorite, places ever. Love these pictures. Sure it got crowded, but waking up every morning to the caldera view, with no sound but the wind and maybe a distant boat was perfect.

I know Santorini gets some hate for how packed it can be, but I still can't wait to go back one day

Santorini is amazing is pretty hectic, but is further away, the beaches are unique (red sand or rocky).

I don’t know, but Santorini might be ‘closed’ in march. So domsome research into that.

a week on Santorini wasn't enough to experience everything as well as get my feet up.

My sister hated it for how many people there was and how expensive it was.

Same here very lucky to have visited! We still talk about going back for the views. I can see the merit of the 'tourist trap' arugment but its still a great little island to explore nonetheless and plenty to do
