Santa Barbara. You would be a 20 minute drive from both. I used to have a house in Big Bear/Lake Arrowhead area. It's a lot of driving just to be in the mountains. SAnta Barbara has a lot of nice hikes with great views.

For a big date weekend, I'd go with Santa Barbera, and earlier in the month if possible. All those areas can have fog, but Santa Barbera might be a little warmer (slightly)
SB has lots of shops, restaurants, galleries, etc. Stay near the beach. Rent bikes and ride around. Do some winetasting in town or head to Santa Ynez valley/Los Olivos/Los Alamos and/or check out Solvang. Check out the Mission.
