From Mexico City, I loved San Miguel de Allende which is about 5 hours away by car - it is a beautiful (and expensive town) known for its shopping and art.
Foreigners are less than 15% of residents and total tourists here. I’m here part-time and travel the rest. One can easily avoid touristy restaurants and “gringolandia” areas if preferred. Easy to still have an authentic Mexican experience in SMA. Come back for a visit!
My girlfriend and I spent 4 days in SMA and absolutely loved it. March 2026, airbnb in city center. The laid-back culture and the vibes of the small city were amazing. Great switch of pace from CDMX where its a constant motion. SMA allowed us to relax while taking in amazing scenery and people.
