Samson SR850
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
The Samson SR850 is a budget-friendly semi-open headphone frequently recommended as an entry-level option for gaming and general listening. While it is praised for its wide soundstage and clarity relative to its low price, it is polarizing due to a sharp treble response and mediocre out-of-the-box comfort.
Pros
- Excellent value for the price, often cited as a top pick under $50
- Wide soundstage due to its semi-open design
- Clear audio quality suitable for gaming and light music production
- V-shaped sound profile that provides a fun listening experience for some users
Cons
- Treble can be very sharp, harsh, or sibilant, which may cause ear fatigue
- Stock ear pads are thin and generally considered uncomfortable
- Construction is highly microphonic, meaning head movements can cause audible noise in the frame
- Fixed cable design is a failure point, with reports of the cable breaking over time
- Weak mid-range performance
Caveats
- Many users consider replacing the stock ear pads with thicker pleather or velour versions a necessity
- Software EQ is often recommended to tame the piercing high frequencies
- The self-adjusting headband may not fit comfortably on larger heads
Best for
- Budget-conscious gamers who need a wide soundstage
- Users looking for an inexpensive entry point into open-back audio
- People comfortable with basic 'modding' like swapping ear pads
Avoid if
- You are sensitive to high-frequency sounds or 'piercing' treble
- You have a large head or prioritize long-term wearing comfort without modifications
- You need a detachable cable for easy replacement

The only local alternative would be Samson SR850, but I find it less comfortable, and is much more microphonic.
I have Samson SR850, comfort is hit and miss (might be fine for small heads, but not for large ones), but the treble are very sharp and harsh I would say it is not worth wearing out they hearing, and also the headphone's whole construction is very microphonic to the point you hear various noises when moving your head,
In this price range I have SHP9500, Samson SR850, Koss KSC75, and Koss Porta Pro, and imo SHP9500 is just superior
Check out the Samson SR850 as well! 👍🏻
For a less neutral audio but still rather clear, Samson SR850. 20€ cheaper. Has a V-shaped profile, so not great mids but the rest tries to compensate for it. Also not comfortable because of thin pads, but you might be able to find replacement pads for them?
Comparing FR graphs also shows that the SR850 is more a treble forward headphone
Samson SR850:Another budget option(around $50). Great for light use, gaming or music.
I would say the same for the Samson SR850, provided you change the pads to the thick pleather ones you can find on Aliexpress.

the Samson SR850 seemed a bit too low quality although i guess it was understandable considering the low price.
