We spent a lovely day in Salerno and it’s got a nice vibe. ... Got a lovely cathedral and promenade and one of the best restaurants I’ve been to in Italy (I think it was called Spunzillo?)

To be fair I'd either stay in naples go to sorrento or salerno ...everything else this time of year is just crazy.
Definitely less touristy and therefore somewhat cheaper. Main advantage is not having to negotiate the packed, non-airconditioned Circumvesuviana in high season with luggage.
