Pros

  • The SP404 is used a lot more in hip hop/ breakbeat/lo-fi . It's a super capable sampler with solid, easy to understand workflow.
  • SP404 is a way better instrument in my opinion. I had one of these devices and used it for like a week and then returned it because I have an SP and it has way more capability.
  • On the other side the SP404 is a very nice sampler with external sound processor effects, so it is also a nice option.
  • I didn't know I needed a sampler until I bought the SP404 about 6 weeks ago. It's great and you can plug you synths and guitar into at the same time.
  • An MPC, SP404, or Digitakt will do all that & more.

Cons

  • I suspect though, that you’ll find that sp404 limiting. The people I know who have had one tend to upgrade to MPC or just go DAW, and use the 404 for sketches.
  • The SP404 workflow isnt for everyone and OP needs to know that

I would get a used SP404 sampler and drum machine. More fun to play along with and excellent FXs chain to exploit.

Leaning toward the sp404. The new one has ACB roland drum machines. I've seen people use it and it makes sense to me
