Pros

  • recently picked up a Roland S-1 that has been super fun to play around with and build little compositions using the built in sequencer.
  • Roland S-1 is probably the best bang for the buck if you don't want / need to spend a whole lot.
  • Roland s-1 comes with effects and polyphony and you would be supporting the Japanese who made it
  • I have both, both are excellent, start with the t-8 because it has drum AND synth
  • But imo the s-1 is a really fun synth, there is more of a learning curve then with the t-8 but you will learn how substractive synthesis works and how to really shape a sound if you put the hours in.

Cons

  • Both t8 and s1 are not grooveboxes. As a beginner i would chose the t8. The s1 is kinda complicated with all short cuts.
  • I've also tried a few Roland Aira units: the T-8, J-6, and S-1. I sold the S-1 (didn't like its buttons and sound and I don't need its powerful sequencer)
  • roland s-1, access virus
  • Roland S-1.

Of the two: I think the s-1 is better for ambience in general but also limited because it is one synth (with fx)
