I'd say you should just do Riviera Maya unless for some reason you really need to be on an island.
There are occasional issues in the Riviera Maya but they are rare and tend to be in Cancun, Play del Carmen or Tulum AND I want to repeat they are extremely rare and it rarely affects tourists(tourism is the predominant economy of this area).

Mi experiencia en Riviera Maya me robó el corazón. Tuve la suerte de compartir esos 9 días con gente maravillosa. Sin duda recomiendo que esta experiencia la organicéis con una agencia especializada en viajes para estudiantes. No paras en ningún segundo y visitas muchos sitios turísticos. Sin duda, a pesar del alto coste, vale la pena cada moneda que has gastado.
