When I took the night bus to Rishikesh, the autos from the bus stop only took you halfway there. Then you had to take his friends. A bit of a scam, but not too big a deal. If you don't mind walking you could get away with only taking the first one. The bus can be several hours late and some of the stops are in the middle of nowhere without any signage.
