Back when I was a kid in the 70s, there was a whole bunch of Mexican resorts that were destination prizes on game shows: Acapulco, Puerta Vallarta, Mazatlan, Cabo San Lucas. They're never mentioned anymore as destinations.

Interestingly I’m doing the opposite, I’m basing myself in Puerto Vallarta and traveling out towards Guadalajara by bus for a few days which takes a bit over 4 hours. Seems like it would have everything you’re looking for.

As someone who has been to Mexico more than a dozen times, and to Puerto Vallarta at least 8 times, most recently earlier this month; if I had a trip booked for early April, I'd be planning to go and keeping an eye on what's happening.
