Pride and Prejudice

the book I have read most often and enjoyed even more with each reread and learned to appreciate even more the older I got is Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice.

Longbourn by Jo Baker is not a fantasy book, but looks at Pride and Prejudice from the servants’ POV

Pride and Prejudice is the second funniest to me. I love Austen’s sense of humour and keen observations on society. It’s more social commentary than romance to me and absolutely hilarious at times.

Parent context: Jane Austen was given to shell shocked soldiers. It’s great because it’s interesting without any high stakes. Reply: This is such a good suggestion. There's enough drama for you to gasp at, but nothing ever feels truly threatening. Austen herself described P&P as "light, bright, and sparkling."

Jane Austen usually deals with the subtle nature in womens role in the broader society. Pride and prejudice, Persuasion are great.

Little Women and Pride and Prejudice are both books that are so timeless because they really highlight what life looked like for women until very recently.

For my actual favourite romance, though, it's still Pride and Prejudice. And I think the reason it works is not because Darcy is a brooding, Byronic character... but because they have to get over their Pride and Prejudices and come to understand each other as people before a romance happens.
