Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Positano is a visually stunning but highly polarizing destination on the Amalfi Coast. While it is celebrated for its iconic scenery and relaxation, it is frequently criticized by Reddit users for being overcrowded, extremely expensive, and physically demanding to navigate due to its steep terrain.

Pros

  • Iconic, stunning scenery and picturesque views.
  • Good base for taking ferries to Capri and Anacapri.
  • Features a unique black sand beach.
  • Offers a rare hostel option for budget-conscious travelers on the Amalfi Coast.

Cons

  • Extremely high costs for accommodation, dining, and shopping.
  • Severe overcrowding and 'walls of people' during peak summer months (June-July).
  • Difficult to walk and navigate due to steep hills and stairs.
  • Logistically challenging to get in and out of compared to hubs like Sorrento.

Caveats

  • Visiting in the off-season (e.g., March) can result in a 'ghost town' experience with many closures.
  • Shoulder season is strongly recommended over peak summer to avoid the worst crowds.
  • Some mentions refer to a board game titled 'Positano,' which is described as a 'fair' auction game with 'safety bumpers.'
  • The town is often viewed more as a scenic backdrop than a deep cultural or historical introduction to Italy.

Best for

  • Scenery and relaxation-focused trips.
  • Travelers using it as a ferry hub for coastal exploration.
  • Shoulder-season visitors looking for the 'Instagram' aesthetic with fewer crowds.

Avoid if

  • You are on a tight budget.
  • You have mobility issues or dislike steep walking.
  • You prefer authentic, less-touristy cultural experiences.
  • You are traveling during peak summer and dislike heavy crowds.

Positano felt busy and touristy. I didn't particularly care for Positano.

Positano is stunning, but it’s more of a scenery and relaxation destination than a first cultural introduction.

I’ve been to Positano many times and go during shoulder season when it’s much more enjoyable. I’ve never seen the “Instagram” crowds in person, except the one time I was there during July ( only went during that month for a wedding).

I prefer both Positano and Ischia over Sorrento. The beaches in Positano aren’t great though, so if you’re going for that, you may be disappointed.

We always base in Positano and love it, although Praiano and Amalfi itself are also a good base.

We usually stay in Positano as a base on the coast and enjoy it.

Positano is our favourite town on the coast, but Ravello and Amalfi (town) are both worthwhile to visit.

I found it so charming and less overrun compared to Positano.

We stayed in Positano and I wish we would have stayed in Sorrento.

Positano has the only hostel on the coast (or did a few years ago at least) so if you're on a budget that's a pretty appealing option. Very expensive for a hostel, but very cheap for the Amalfi coast.
