Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Portland is highly regarded as a travel destination for its world-class food scene and proximity to diverse natural landscapes. While users praise its walkability and historic charm, opinions are split on whether the best attractions are within the city limits or require day trips to surrounding areas.

Pros

  • Exceptional food scene with highly-rated restaurants like Duckfat and Hot Suppa
  • Easy access to outdoor activities including hikes, waterfalls, and coastal islands
  • Public transport friendly within city limits
  • Features a top-tier children's museum for family travel
  • Historic architecture and a 'folksy' or 'romantic' atmosphere

Cons

  • Can be quite expensive to stay in
  • Unpredictable and often rainy spring weather
  • Nightlife may be a mismatch for certain group dynamics (e.g., traveling with parents)

Caveats

  • Some travelers feel the most interesting attractions are located outside the city itself
  • Mentions are split between Portland, Maine (coastal/islands) and Portland, Oregon (Pacific Northwest/waterfalls)
  • Spring weather is specifically noted as being potentially worse than other northern cities

Best for

  • Food enthusiasts
  • Families with young children
  • Travelers seeking a mix of urban culture and nature day trips

Avoid if

  • You are on a strict budget
  • You want guaranteed sunny weather for a spring trip
  • You prefer staying strictly within a city rather than exploring the surrounding region

Portland is a great little town too. My favorite restaurant there was Duckfat.

Seattle and Portland are pretty public transport friendly within the city limits.

Portland has a much better food scene than Seattle, imo. Check out David's, the Front Room, Hot Suppa, Duck Fat, Empire. People will be friendlier and more "folksy." Portland is going to have much more historic buildings and a very romantic coastline. I think Portland will be cooler than Seattle probably.
