AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Pokémon Legends: Z-A receives a polarizing reception, with praise for its refined battle mechanics and the return of Mega Evolutions clashing with heavy criticism regarding its technical performance and limited scope. While some fans consider it a 'return to form' for the franchise, others are disappointed by the move from open wilderness to a single-city setting and report significant issues with online cheaters.

Pros

  • Refined battle mechanics that many users find superior to those in Legends: Arceus
  • The return of Mega Evolutions, which adds excitement to gameplay and trailers
  • Improved performance, including better frame stability and loading times, when played on next-generation hardware
  • A refreshing gameplay loop for fans who enjoyed the 'Legends' series formula

Cons

  • Technical and visual quality frequently described as dated, with complaints about poor shading and 'PS2-era' graphics
  • Online play is reportedly filled with cheaters and highly competitive 'sweats' shortly after launch
  • The single-city setting feels restrictive and a 'step back' for players who preferred the expansive wilderness of previous titles
  • Frustrating mechanics, such as time-of-day changes automatically kicking players out of active battles
  • Lackluster post-game content and fewer legendary Pokémon to hunt compared to its predecessor

Caveats

  • The game omits Pokémon abilities, which significantly alters traditional combat strategies
  • Interiors are often limited to single rooms for plot points, with many shops functioning as menus
  • The experience is noted to be quite easy to complete, which may impact longevity for veteran players

Best for

  • Fans of the Legends: Arceus gameplay style who want a more battle-centric experience
  • Players specifically interested in Mega Evolutions and shiny hunting
  • Users with access to newer hardware to mitigate performance issues

Avoid if

  • You prefer exploring diverse natural biomes over a strictly urban environment
  • You are sensitive to dated graphics or poor technical optimization
  • You are looking for a deep, challenging post-game experience

I had a lot of fun during the initial launch season but I tried playing this current season and was super bummed at how many sweats and cheaters were in lobbies.

I prefer the world over Z-A a lot, but the battle mechanics of Z-A are MUCH better

Just started playing it and love it, like I did Arceus.

It has a lot of QoL changes I appreciate that I hope make it into the main games. I like the battle system and I like that you can swap moves in and out, you're not just locked into 4 anymore. I agree with the people who say the map sucks and is boring to explore but otherwise I've been really happy with it.

Although others may disagree, I think PLZA has been a much-needed return to form for the franchise. I haven't enjoyed a Pokemon game this much since Let's Go Pikachu, which was 7 years ago!

I enjoyed Z-A's battle system. It was a nice change of pace, but it doesn't replace the turn-based battles for me.

This game has been the easiest to complete and didn’t feel like much of an achievement

Unless you into shiny hunting, post game really is abysmal.
