Plitvice Lakes
Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Plitvice Lakes is frequently cited as a premier natural highlight of Croatia, often described as superior to other regional parks like Krka. However, it is a polarizing addition to itineraries due to significant travel times from coastal hubs and intense crowding during peak hours.
Pros
- Stunning scenery featuring interconnected lakes, waterfalls, and wooden boardwalks
- Widely considered one of the most beautiful locations in Europe
- Unique upper and lower lake trail systems
Cons
- Significant travel time, often requiring 3 to 4 hours each way from Split
- Heavy crowding, particularly after 10:00 AM when tour buses arrive
- Can be uncomfortably hot and packed during July and August
Caveats
- A day trip from Split may result in spending 8+ hours in transit, which some travelers find excessive for short trips
- The park is not suitable for those seeking solitude unless arriving at opening
Best for
- Travelers who can stay overnight nearby to start trails at dawn
- Nature enthusiasts who prioritize scenery over transit convenience
- Visitors with flexible, longer itineraries
Avoid if
- You are on a short (one week or less) trip based in Split
- You have a low tolerance for large crowds and tourist hotspots
- You want to avoid long-duration bus or car travel

Theoretically possible as a day trip from Split as well but it’s really a bit too far.
the drive to plitvice is like 3 hours each way and you'll spend half your day just getting there.
Apart from Krka (river and waterfalls), other beautiful national parks in that part of Croatia are Plitvice (lakes and waterfalls) and Kornati (island chain), each doable as a day trip from Split, depending on your taste.
Thanks for your advice, it really makes me want to see Plitvice, but isn't it too far away?
Most people find it less compelling compared to places like Plitvice Lakes or even adding more time around Split (for islands like Hvar or Brač).
Plitvice was my favorite place in all of my last Europe trip Krka is brilliant but plitvice was a level above
With just a week I would ditch Plitvice. It is adding an unnecessary 8 hour travel or more when you could be exploring Split or spending more time on one of the islands.
I would skip Plitvice and stay in Split those days, it’s a long way up to the park and you don’t have any time dedicated to the city of Split, which is worth a day or two visit. ... at nearly 4 hours each way from Split (longer by bus), I wouldn’t waste that much time in transit on such a short trip when the Split region has tons to explore that is worthwhile.
Plitvice is well worth your time, and IMO the best reason to see Croatia.
But be warned: in July / August some of the touristic hotspots like Plitvice Lakes or Dubrovnik are crowded, and it can get a bit hot for sightseeing.
