Cancun is an inexpensive and short flight from Raleigh. From there, we liked going to Playa del Carmen or Tulum.
I stayed in Playa Del Carmen, not in a resort. Beautiful beaches. Great access to day trips/tours, the town was very touristy but nice.

Playa Del Carmen would be nice. A lot of singles and people around your age. Safer and more affordable than Cancun. AirBnBs are great options to save as well. One of my favorite home bases over the last 5-6 years as a digital nomad.
I’d say go to Playa Del Carmen instead of Cancun. Cheaper, safer, easier to move around and just better in general.
