Reddit take

AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote

Pisa is a polarizing destination often described as a "check-the-box" stop. While the Leaning Tower and the surrounding Campo dei Miracoli are widely praised for their architectural beauty, many travelers find the rest of the city underwhelming or "tourist trappy." It is frequently recommended as a 2-3 hour pit stop or a half-day trip rather than an overnight destination, with opinions split on whether the city beyond the tower offers enough charm to justify a longer visit.

Pros

  • Iconic Leaning Tower and beautiful Cathedral/Baptistry complex
  • Convenient and affordable train access from Florence and Lucca
  • Pleasant walking routes, such as the stroll from the Arno river to the tower
  • Lively university town atmosphere for those who venture beyond the main tourist square

Cons

  • Aggressive street sellers and scam artists near the tower
  • Perceived as having very little to do once the tower has been viewed
  • Can feel underwhelming or "mid" compared to nearby cities like Siena or Florence
  • Highly tourist-centric and crowded in the main square

Caveats

  • Most visitors recommend spending only 2 to 3 hours in the city
  • Overnight stays are generally discouraged in favor of staying in more atmospheric Tuscan towns

Best for

  • Bucket-list travelers wanting an iconic photo op
  • Quick day trips or pit stops while traveling between major Italian cities
  • Travelers already staying in nearby Lucca

Avoid if

  • You prefer immersive cultural experiences over quick landmark visits
  • You have limited time and want to prioritize more rewarding Tuscan hill towns
  • You are easily frustrated by heavy tourist crowds and aggressive vendors

After, I headed back to Pisa where I took my obligatory photos before heading back to Florence in the evening.

People say this is overrated and I agree. Not worth going out of the way to, but glad we stopped on the way.

Otherwise your plans look OK though Pisa, largely destroyed by allies in ww2 is often not the most compelling location.

If you want to tick the leaning tower off your list, a day trip from Lucca to Pisa is worthwhile, otherwise, there’s really no reason to go there.

Pisa is great, it's a univestity town and there's a lot to see and do beyond the Torre Pendente.

Head north-west out of Italy by train. Hop your way through Florence, Pisa, or Genoa for another 7 days.

Everything looks pretty good EXCEPT I would see Pisa as part of your traveling around Tuscany time and cut the overnight there. It's basically just the tower and not much else IMO.
