If we're talking 8-9 days I'd suggest 5 in Ljubljana as a base for day trips and then you could do 3 days by the coast in Piran or you could go east to Maribor, which is also really nice.
Hope you figure out a way to get to Piran, it is beautiful.
Piran and Rovinj are nice.
You can stop in Piran shortly on the way to Croatia.
You could easily do 10-14 days just in Slovenia. Ljubljana as a base, day trips to Bled and Bohinj, few days in the Soča Valley, maybe Piran on the coast if you want something different.
You have an old town and not too far away, connected by bus, Piran and Izola.
I also really liked Piran, by the coast.
Piran, Izola and Koper have nice old town centres and beaches close by.
Piran is very nice though.
Day 7 - Piran or Trieste (didn´t decide yet)
