Reddit take
AI summary of the Reddit excerpts below — not a quote
Pinterest is primarily used as a visual discovery tool for fashion, photography, and aesthetic inspiration, though user sentiment is increasingly mixed. While it remains a staple for organizing wishlists and styling ideas, long-term users report a significant decline in quality, largely due to an influx of AI-generated content and a repetitive recommendation algorithm.
Pros
- Effective for gathering visual ideas and personal styling inspiration
- Useful as a 'window-shopping' tool to manage shopping impulses through wishlists
- Go-to platform for photography references and aesthetic discovery
- Helpful for organizing specific projects like hairstyle ideas or home decor
Cons
- Search results are increasingly cluttered with AI-generated and heavily filtered images
- Algorithm often shows repetitive content rather than new inspiration
- Frequent issues with broken links and intrusive, buggy advertisements
- Specific categories like hairstyles are described as nearly unusable due to 'creepily perfect' AI content
Caveats
- Many users feel the platform has 'gone downhill' compared to its earlier versions
- The platform can occasionally lead to feelings of 'shame and disappointment' regarding personal style or self-image
Best for
- Visual brainstorming for fashion and photography
- Organizing digital wishlists to curb immediate spending
- Users with niche tastes that may be less affected by mainstream AI trends
Avoid if
- You are frustrated by AI-generated imagery in search results
- You require reliable, direct links to purchase products or find original sources
- You prefer a discovery engine that prioritizes new content over repetitive saves

I use pinterest a lot for inspo.
If you’re a visual learner this is where Pinterest will come in useful.
I also still use Pinterest, my fashion tastes aren't very modern so I think my results are less inundated with AI.
Delete Tiktok, Pinterest, Instagram, whatever is influencing you.
I was on Pinterest looking up some inspiration but I feel like this is kind of unique.
Pinterest sent me an email saying one of my pins had been removed for content related to "self harm". They don't show you the pin but told me it came from the board where I keep formal and couture fashion pictures so I had a good guess as to the reason it was removed. But since I'm not out here collecting thinspo, I appealed and they reactivated the pin. . . A few months later, same deal. Same pin got removed, I appealed, they rejected my appeal but then a couple days later reactivated it.
I use the wishlist feature in my indyx app, or Pinterest
I've been on Pinterest and I've found a few photos of styles I really like (pictured above)
These days I deeply resent Pinterest (which used to be legit useful). Literally all I ever search for on there are 1930s-1940s demi-couture, early 1980s Architectural Digest features, and Ithell Colquhoun artworks...and somehow Pinterest thinks that means I want, or would settle for, something from SHEIN. It literally hurts my eyeballs and I have quit using them for precisely that reason.
A lot of people complain about Pinterest, but you really need to give it some direction. I dig my Pinterest. It's a weird place, but I've done a lot to cultivate a vibe and get what I want to see. First go into Settings then Refine your recommendations then AI Content and you can turn all those suckers off. It's not perfect but it will drastically reduce the amount of AI slop served up.
