Pros

  • pienza is a jewel. a must have in any trip.
  • base yourself in a small town like montalcino or pienza instead of florence the whole time, you get the brunello wine region right outside your door and it's a completely different vibe.
  • I typically stay outside Pienza --a bit easier to get to Montalcino, Montepulciano , the Chianti region and Cortona etc. It is wasted time driving from Florence and at the premium for staying in even a middle of the road place in Florenc...
  • Pienza is small and absolutely gorgeous with beautiful views. I would not miss it.
  • In fact tomorrow we were supposed to go to Siena, but we are skipping it just to spend more time here in Pienza.

Cons

  • We rented a car to drive to Pienza and while it was a lovely town, ultimately it was pretty small and not worth the long drive.
  • I cannot imagine staying in Pienza with so many other better options in immediate proximity.
  • Pienza is not worth the hassle if you don't have a car If you get there then you are stranded there

I typically stay outside Pienza --a bit easier to get to Montalcino, Montepulciano , the Chianti region and Cortona etc. It is wasted time driving from Florence and at the premium for staying in even a middle of the road place in Florence I've found some extraordinary places in the countryside.

Passignano, Umbria and Pienza, Tuscany were stunning and not at all busy.

I'd say Pienza and San Quirico, the latter especially for the surroundings.

We are currently staying at an agroturismo in Pienza. It’s called Cretaiole and let me tell you… it’s a life changing trip.
